Chill Moody is one of the most impressive independent artists in the game right now. In his city of Philadelphia he is a celebrity; from starting his own record label, to becoming the Music Ambassador for the city of Philadelphia, to being voted the best rapper in the city, to now collaborating with the Dock Street Brewery to create the nicethingsIPA (this is only a tiny exaple of his long list of accomplishments). Chill Moody is a model of initiative that young, up-and-coming artists should look up to and work to emulate. While Chill’s main focus is music, he is always finding new and creative ways to expand his brand.
I’ve said it hundreds of times, everything is coming up independent. What a lot of people don’t realize though, is that to be independent, you need to branch out, far past what a signed artist would do. While, of course, you need to master your craft, you need to spend as much time creating your own opportunities in ways that people have never witnessed before. That is exactly what Chill Moody is doing by creating the nicethingsIPA.
Remember when I said, “Everything is coming up independent? I hope so, if not you really need to work on your reading comprehension skills. But that statement doesn’t just apply to the music industry, it sure as hell applies to beer as well. In the past few years, local, craft breweries have been popping up all over the place, and IPAs have been some of their top performing brews. By partnering with with a local brewery, Chill is doing something new and unique to promote his music and his nicethings brand, he is combining independent businesses from different industries to work together. Independent collaboration is the name of the game. This is why Chill Moody is such an impressive example of independent success.
A note to younger artists: take a lesson from Chill Moody, find collaborations in unlikely places. Never stop finding ways to build and expand.
